The history of AHKs: pioneers in international business

Klatschen Frau

The history of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs) is a story of commitment, pioneering spirit and a passion for international trade. For many decades, AHKs have been an indispensable part of the German economy and play a central role in promoting international trade and business.

The beginning of the AHKs

Since our first AHK was founded in Brussels in 1894, more and more chambers of commerce were added as economic relations have become increasingly intertwined worldwide, and today, we are here to assist you locally on all continents. From the very beginning, the mission of these chambers has been to support German companies in their business activities abroad and to promote the trade of imports and exports.

The DIHK and the IHKs: The backbone of the AHKs

The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry (abbreviated ‘IHKs’ based on the name in German, Industrie- und Handelskammern) are vital with regard to the potential of the AHKs. The DIHK, which all IHKs are (statutory) members of, coordinates and supports the AHKs in their work.

The close links between the DIHK, IHKs and AHKs create a powerful network that enables German companies to be successful worldwide. This triangular relationship offers numerous advantages:

This triangular relationship offers numerous advantages:

1. Synergies and resources

The close connection between the DIHK, IHKs and AHKs creates synergies and enables the efficient use of resources. The AHKs successfully represent the interests of German companies and local businesses in the host countries in dealings with politicians and the administration. The regional IHK network in Germany provides companies from all sectors with quick and easy access to the services offered by the AHKs, delegations and representative offices of the German economy.

2. Holistic support

German companies can count on comprehensive support at both the local and global level. From setting up a company to tapping into new markets abroad, they are supported by our network.

3. Representation and position of influence

The consolidated representation of the identified and balanced interests of the entire German economy in Germany and abroad by the DIHK, IHKs and AHKs strengthens the position of German companies at the national and international level – an invaluable asset in a globalised economy.

4. A look into the future

The history of the AHKs is distinguished by innovation and adaptability. In an ever-changing global economy, AHKs will continue to play a key role in helping German companies access new markets, overcome trade barriers, and capitalise on business opportunities.

We are continuously growing as well as are constantly expanding and developing our services for members and customers. Digitalisation brings our locations in the various regions even closer together and facilitates dialogue and sharing with each other as well as with members and customers. However, personal contacts locally on site are still essential for business success, making us the first point of contact for bilateral business relationships in Germany and around the world.
